Primeros Pasos is a clinic in rural Guatemala that provides comprehensive health care and health education to communities in need. Before Primeros Pasos opened its doors in 2002, the communities of the Palajunoj Valley suffered from lack of access to adequate health care and non-existent health education. Now, with the support of a grassroots network of generous donors, Primeros Pasos provides over 7,000 patients a year with quality medical care, dental care, and health education.

Give Health Care To Children

For as little as $10, you can give pre-school and elementary school aged children their annual physical check-up, parasite and other lab testing and preventative health education. We will send the special person you are honoring with your gift a beautiful certificate acknowledging that a generous donation was given in their name.

A little about the Program:

The Healthy Schools program works with 10 rural schools and 12 day cares in the area to provide necessary medical care and health education. Every day, one class from a surrounding school arrives at the clinic. Prior to their visit, the students are given sample cups and asked to bring in fecal samples for analysis in the clinic’s laboratory. Each child receives a medical and dental check-up and participates in fun, interactive health education classes given in the clinic’s education classroom. The day not only provides students with immediate clinical care, but also tools for bettering their hygiene habits and preventative measures to improve their quality of life.

In addition to the clinic visits, throughout the school year health educators visit the schools providing one hour workshops on topics like: nutrition, hygiene, sexual education, the environment, alcohol and drugs, domestic violence, natural disasters, and children’s rights. Each year over 500 workshops are provided throughout the valley. Through the access to health education, the children learn better hygiene habits as well as preventive measures to ensure their quality of health is not compromised.

A little about the program:
Primeros Pasos' Walk-In Consultation Program was started in 2006 to serve people of all ages living in the Palajunoj Valley, not just school children. Primeros Pasos now sees over 7,000 patients annually, with over 60% of those patients coming through our Walk-In Consultation Program. This program offers medical services, dental care, laboratory tests, medicine and educational services- which focus on preventable problems that when untreated often lead to serious complications. Included in the Walk-In Consult Program is the Lab Program which offers blood, urine, and fecal analysis, including important screens for GI parasites, HIV, and hepatitis.

Empower Women Through Education

Empower Women Through Education

For as little as $10, you can give the gift of education to the mothers, grandmothers and caretakers of the communities surrounding the Primeros Pasos clinic.

A little about the program:

The Stairway to Good Health Program was implemented in January 2008 with a small group of mothers, grandmothers and caretakers. Because many indigenous women are not given the opportunity to advance in school, they in-turn have not been given the educational tools to reduce the health risks associated with rural living conditions.

Now, we have 94 women enrolled in six different community groups. These groups attend monthly workshops where they learn about nutrition, hygiene, first aid, natural medicine, self-esteem, gender, civic participation, arthritis, gastritis, menstruation, environmental hazards, domestic and sexual violence, and other topics of interest surrounding their health and the health of their families. The mission of this program is to raise health awareness, provide information that may benefit participants, and empower the women to improve the lives of themselves, their children and families.

$50 can fund 3 weeks of medicines given to program participants

For as little as $10, you can give the gift of excellent dental care to the men, women and children living in the Palajunoj Valley.

A little about the program:

The Dental Program was formalized last year through a partnership with Primeros Pasos and The University of San Carlos (USCOC) in Guatemala City. Dentists from USOC work at Primeros Pasos during their year of community service following graduation from dental school. They provide dental check ups to the children of the schools, day cares and walk-in patients. Once a week, they facilitate the fluoride program at the our 10 partner schools in the Palajunoj Valley. At the clinic, they conduct extractions, fillings, sealants, cleanings and any other dental work possible based on resource availability. Our Dentists are responsible for maintaining records of all patients and services provided by the dental clinic and we value this vital addition to clinic services.

$10 will provide liquid nitrogen for 2 months

$20 will provide disinfectant for 1 month

$50 will provide 65 children with dental check-ups

$100 will provide a month's salary for the dental assistant

$500 will provide 3 month's salary for the dentist
